City backtracks, OKs G-8 protests at Daley Plaza
By Kristen Mack, Chicago Tribune reporter
5:05 p.m. CST, December 22, 2011
When the G-8 and NATO protests kick off next spring, Daley Plaza will likely be the starting point.
After initially rejecting an anti-war group’s application to hold a rally at one of Chicago’s primary gathering spots in the Loop, the city’s Public Building Commission reversed course.
“Daley Plaza will be open to public assembly and public activity” during the summits of world leaders, the city agency wrote to the American Civil Liberties Union.
An organization of protesters who call themselves the Coalition Against NATO/G-8 War & Poverty Agenda counted the reversal as a victory on Thursday.
“This is a small but important step,” Joe Iosbaker, the group’s spokesman, said at a City Hall news conference.

Kabul — NATO/G8 meetings are scheduled to take place from May 19-21 next year in Chicago. Plans are ramping up everywhere. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen exulted over bringing NATO and the G8 to Chicago, and Clinton promised to call Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and convey Rasmussen’s glowing opinion that Chicago, built upon diversity and determination, shares values that underpin NATO. Activists on the ground, envisioning a different kind of Chicago, and bracing themselves for the crushing, militarized police response that in recent years has consistently met protesters at these events, can only hope that this is not the case.

Local activists gear up for G8, NATO summits planned for city
By Andy Grimm Tribune reporter

Activists are planning massive demonstrations to coincide with the G8 and NATO summits in Chicago scheduled for spring 2012, with crowds of protesters likely to reach “tens of thousands,” organizers said.
More than 160 members representing about 50 groups from across the U.S. and Canada gathered Sunday at the Chicago-Kent College of Law to discuss strategy and start planning two large-scale protests and a march that during the week-long joint summit, which is set for mid-May.
